Regency romance is a subgenre of historical romance novels where stories are based on the period of English Regency, sometime in the early 19th century. This subgenre is further divided into two categories:
Below are some of the elements commonly found in regency romance novels and has endeared countless numbers of readers in the said genre:
These novels usually depict characters from opposing social classes. Male characters are reminiscent of Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, and the women are from families with a lower status or income. Conflict happens when two social classes collide, and the ensuing romance is met with resistance from respective families and society in general.
Marriages based on love were not an option for most women of that period, as their families placed more emphasis on finding men with a steady income.
With money and security as the primary consideration for getting wed, protagonists in regency romance novels are often seen going against the flow. They are depicted as women of principle and look for other qualities in a man aside from money. Quite ironically, these female characters end up marrying the richest men - for love (such as Elizabeth Bennet).
This is perhaps the most entertaining aspect of Regency romances. They typically depict the social norms and activities of the era and give readers a sneak peek of what it’s like to live during that time.
Social customs are discussed in greater detail, such as dinner invitations, events, balls, and dances. Modern readers find this fascinating, as the manners of the Regency era greatly contrast with how people interact socially today.
If you want to get started with this highly entertaining subgenre of literature, you may browse on Kindle and Goodreads for some options. Better yet, you may browse through the books listed on this site.

I think what I loved most about this story was how Cho manages to combine those two genres together so seamlessly without sacrificing any of their individual strengths. It’s hard enough to find a fantasy novel that engages me but even harder to find one that also has an incredibly well-written political mystery. And the writing style is refreshingly immersive while still being incredibly accessible. This book tackles systemic issues in society that are still relevant today. The protagonist is also not without her faults which makes for an interesting read!
The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon will not disappoint. It’s one of the first to make me fall in love with fantasy romance and it was also my introduction to Amy Harmon's writing. This book is beautifully written, full of hope and healing amidst a medieval world that feels so real. Witnessing Lark and Tiras's budding relationship transform beyond captive and captor was epic! I absolutely devoured this book and didn’t want to put it down.
What if I told you that there is a book on this list that will have you laughing out loud with every page turn, and yet still has an epic romance at its core? The Lightning-Struck Heart follows our protagonist as he searches for love amidst all the chaos happening around him as he learns to become a wizard. Klune balances the story beautifully, showing that sometimes you find love in the most unexpected places and sometimes all it takes is for your heart to be struck by lightning.
The thrill of romance and exploration calls to us all in some way or another. Whether you are happily married or still dreaming of meeting your match, these fantasy adventure books with romance will sweep you right off your feet. Stepping through the portal is just what you need to enjoy a good read. So whether it is elves, dragons or vampires that get your heart racing, there are plenty of pages left to turn in this genre today!
Historical Romance has been a favorite genre of mine since I was in my teens. There's something about the power and mystery of those bygone eras that just draws me in every time.
The elaborate gowns, the dashingly dressed men with their strong chins and devilish grins, the veiled ladies skilled at battle (or not), all replace my modern world.
I find myself engrossed in stories of royalty-genetics that stayed entrenched for decades. And it's cool to pretend I am too; like I'm on a grand tour among royalty or living out an age-old curse or mystery—which always need solving. A long ago era where women didn't have much power but there were lines drawn up by society about which they could not cross- is really rich with subtext especially when you are immersed in fantasy.
Here are some of my favorite Historical Romance authors:
Historical Romance author of the winning Bridgerton series on Netflix is one of the funniest writers out there for historical romance novels. She can make you laugh until your stomach hurts while still telling an amazing story with characters who will stay with you long after you've put down her book.
If any author could be called Queen when it comes to historical romance, it would have to be Balogh. Her writing style is so distinct and well-developed that else could ever do it the way she does.
I love this author because she just seems to get better and better with each book. And her latest release, "Accidental Plus-One," is hands down one of the best books I've read all year!
Her series about the Hathaway family is adorable and she's also brought us some amazing stand-alones, including "Suddenly You," which I personally think should be made into a movie because it was that good.
This author has been around for a while but I only stumbled upon her books over the last couple of years. Now I can't wait for her next release!
I love her historicals because of how sassy they are. Not to mention that her characters are just so much fun!
Her "Samantha Jellicoe" series of six books was AND IS my favorite. She is usually known for writing about daring heroines but all of her books really are amazing.
Not only are these authors talented writers who craft intricate plots with unforgettable characters but they have a way of making the reader laugh out loud and feel their heart race at different points in each story. I hope that if you haven't read any of these books before, now is your chance to find a new favorite author! If you're wondering about specific books on my list, feel free to ask! I love sharing what's in my TBR and what I've already read.
If you’ve read a historical romance book series in the past, chances are you remember how thrilling the experience was. Going through each book in the series gives the reader a close familiarity not only with the characters but also with the historical period depicted.
In this article, let’s discover why reading several volumes of historical romance could be your best reading experience yet:
A Taste Of Fact and Fiction
Though still considered a broad category of fiction, historical romance novels have an abundant mixture of truth and fact in them! While the plot and the characters are still figments of the author’s imagination, the setting and backdrop around them are real.
They Provide A Window To Past Cultures and Customs
Period-based novels allow the reader to take a closer look at the past and see how people lived and viewed the world. There’s something evocative about the past that causes us to look at it through rose-colored lenses. Add the romantic aspect to all these and the pleasant mental journey is complete.
Empathy With Characters
Heroes and heroines in historical romance novels belonged in a different period. But it is easy to mentally “bond” with them because they mirror the reader’s present struggles and conflict.
One commonly occurring theme in these novels is love, either forbidden, unrequited, or unfulfilled. Love is a theme that modern readers can relate to, even if the lovestruck character “lived” some 200 years ago.
Powerful Conflict and Storylines
Stronger conflict is emphasized if contrasted with present circumstances. For example, reading about lovers in a time of war has an instant ring of interest to it. The reason for this is the conflict that surrounds them. Such believable conflict couldn’t be depicted in a modern romance story in a time of peace.
The greater the conflict, the more we want to find out how it resolves. Conflict resolution causes the reader to hold on to every word and every page. When this happens, days of reading an entire series of books usually feel only like a few hours or minutes.
It is always good to start looking for romance novels in a historical period you’re interested in. Some popular periods to check out are:
This will give you a wide variety of books to choose from. But to make your search more specific, you can drill it down to a specific setting and era. Here are some ideas:
Need examples? Les Miserables, though a political and social commentary in many aspects, can also be considered a classic example of a historical romance book series.
Today, readers almost exclusively refer to “historical romance books” as fictional love stories. And this definition is not wrong. Works such as Girl Meets Duke, Bridgerton, and Outlander are all good examples of a historical romance book series.
]]>Let’s take a look at some of the best fantasy adventure books ever written. This is by no means a top all-time list, but a list of highly acclaimed books to help get you started in this genreSome of these titles may already be familiar to you (through movie adaptations), or they may not. Feel free to check them out, and if you like to go further into a fantasy adventure, you can always dig deeper!

The Harry Potter Series, by J.K. Rowling
The Harry Potter books now belong to the stuff of legend. Its story revolves around an orphaned boy who lived a miserable life with his aunt and uncle. His life changes when he receives an invitation to study at a wizard school named Hogwarts. There, his true destiny unfolds.
Characterization is one of the main strengths of the Harry Potter series. The first book starts with a depiction of Harry’s boring life with his aunt that readers can empathize with. This is a stark contrast to the fascinating life and mission he had as a powerful wizard.
A Storm Of Swords, by George R.R. Martin
Set in a fictional faraway land named Westeros, A Storm Of Swords features intriguing and heart-stopping adventure. It is part of a series called A Song Of Ice and Fire, the literary material later adapted by the hit TV series, Game Of Thrones.
This novel is filled with political intrigue, the tension between powerful kingdoms, and lofty characters that seek glory and control over their known world. The book originally included legendary stories such as the Red Wedding, the mutiny against the commander of the Night’s Watch, and the imprisonment of Tyrion.
Whether you’ve watched Game Of Thrones or not, it is worth reading A Storm Of Swords, because there are some details in the book that aren’t included in the TV adaptation.
The Lord Of The Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien
No modern fantasy adventure book list would be truly complete without at least an honorable mention of the Lord Of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The concept of the story is a literal adventure in itself. From Frodo Baggins’ simple life in the Shire, he took a dangerous journey across the Middle Earth as the bearer of the Ring that brought absolute power.
Both the literary and cinematic depiction of that journey is well worth it for anyone who wants to join the ride. Tolkien doesn’t disappoint in painting a world that is both romantic and dreary, filled with both good and evil, but where the goodness of man ultimately triumphed.
A Final Word
I’ve mentioned three (3) of the best and most popular fantasy adventure books ever created. But don’t end your book search here. There are hundreds and thousands of fascinating books out there in the adventure genre waiting to be discovered!
]]>I am preparing for the launch of my very first magic realism novel - Rebirth of Bao. I’ve just shared a cover reveal on an Instagram post and can’t wait till the official launch of this novel to the avid reader community of magic realism!
Magical realism is one of the most distinctive literary movements of the past hundred years. While writers from all around the world have created significant works in the style, it is particularly associated with Latin American authors.
It is a term that was first used in 1925 by a German art critic. In his book, he described how paintings from this era were different from expressionism. He called it “magischer realismus” to show that there are many things in the real world that can be strange and magical when you look at them carefully.
The novels of magical realism are all unique; nevertheless, they all have specific characteristics in common, such as:
In a magical realism work, the setting is always someplace in this world that the reader is already familiar with.
Every magical realism tale contains fantastic elements that don't exist in our reality, from speaking to dead characters to telepathy. However, they are treated as typical within the story.
The authors intentionally leave the magic in their stories unexplained to make them seem more real and, as a result, more acceptable.
In regions of Latin America that were economically enslaved and exploited by Western nations, the literary form is prevalent. In addition, the magic realism style was used to express abhorrence and criticism of imperialism by writers.
Authors of magic realism don't stick to the same narrative strategies. Instead, they try new ways of storytelling, erasing all boundaries between reality and fantasy. Magic realism should never be taken for granted because every tale in the genre is different from the last. However, they will always have those magical elements that make them surreal and intriguing.
I write magic realism because it is so much more than a type of storytelling to me.
It encapsulates the magic and realism I see in this world. It turns life into fluid magic. I write magic realism because it has become one of my favorite way to express myself.
When I am writing magic realism, anything is possible; there are no boundaries or limits… only possibility after possibility after possibility.
As an author of magic realism, I can bring meaning to the mundane things in life like grocery shopping, doing laundry, getting gas for your car, etc., while maintaining a sense of wonderment at how fantastic these tasks really are when you step away from them and look at them from another perspective.
The best magic realism authors do not create unrealistic plots or characters; instead, they tell realistic tales about the imaginative events that happen all around us while we're too busy living our lives to pay attention.
Through their often perplexing works, magic realism authors have found a method to convey life’s particular and paradoxical experience, both of its remote possibilities and harsh realities. Their writings can provide us with a jolt of the otherworldly grandeur of existence.
Prepare to walk the fine line between magic and reality as you delve into my newest magical realism book, The Rebirth of Bao!
]]>In today's article, we dive into what magical realism is and how it came about!
The Definition of Magical Realism
The History of Magical Realism
3 Examples of Magical Realism
Magical Realism is a magical, dreamlike atmosphere with real-life situations. There are magical aspects in the story but it does not overtake the plot of the story.
The personification or symbolism of magical elements can be used to convey some deeper truths about human nature that might otherwise go unknown by readers if these magical things did not exist.
The definition of magical realism might be different for both readers and writers but it all depends on the context of magical realism being used!
Magical Realism has been around since the 1920s and while magical realism was not called magical realism at that time, it would later become a term to describe this type of writing.
The first magical realist novel is said to be "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez which was published in 1985. Later on, magical realism would be used in other novels such as "Love in the Time of Cholera" and even inspired some magical realist paintings.
Some magical realist paintings include Salvador Dali's "Persistence of Memory", Rene Magritte's "The Son of Man" and even some magical realism in the painting "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" by Richard Dadd.
Today, magical realism can be found all over literature but it is still mostly used in magical realism paintings!
There are many examples of magical realism in literature, paintings, and even movies but here are a few popular examples I’ve rounded up:
Published in 1967, this novel si famously recognized as a notable achievement in literature. It tells the story of the multi-generational Buendía family, whose patriarch, José Arcadio Buendía, founded the town of Macondo.
Gabriel Garca Márquez, Nobel prize-winning author, wrote the novel Love in the Time of Cholera. In 1985, the novel was originally released in Spanish, followed by an English translation in 1988!
World War II is in full swing, and the Allies just invaded Nazi-held Europe. Led by a sadist, Capitan Vidal, a force of soldiers is dispatched to a secluded forest in Spain in order to flush out the insurgents. Capitan Vidal’s daughter Ofelia is dragged into Pan's Labyrinth, a magical world of mythical beings, after witnessing his terrible savagery.
Have you read any of the novels listed? What are some examples of your favorite magical realism novels? When I was young, Magic Realism seemed like the most romantic art form. It was mysterious and exotic because it came from another imaginary world. Magic realism is when something that seems impossible in reality happens in a story.
The best example might be Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, where she falls down a rabbit hole and meets talking animals who are playing croquet with flamingos as mallets.
Magic realists often utilize supernatural elements or inexplicable coincidences to create an irrational sense of reality. Still, it isn't always about fantasy worlds - writers also used it for social commentary on our society using realistic settings such as the one we have seen in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Magical realism is a style of writing that mixes supernatural elements with real-world activities to help you understand reality. Toni Morrison, Gabriel Marcia Marquez, Aimee Bender, and Isabel Allende are best-selling magical realists.
The following elements you would find in the works of these pioneers, regardless of their plots and writing styles:
What is the best way to begin writing magical realism tales?
Your story should follow the basic requirements of magical realism:
For better understanding, let's look at the short story of Carmen Maria Machado, “Especially Heinous,” as a case study. I'll summarize the narrative without giving away any spoilers:
By mixing two fantasy plots throughout the narrative, Heinous goes beyond the limits. One portion of the story is about the dark drums of Manhattan spirits.
Despite these absurd plots, the narrative focuses on how Stabler and Benson investigate their strange encounters, with many "episodes" dedicated entirely to a character's mental state. Contemporary fiction usually tries to push the boundaries of form, and this tale's narrative construction certainly does so by leveraging episode summaries to tell an exciting adventure.
In a nutshell, the enraged spirits of Manhattan's voiceless women represent a rejection of the culture of rape and sexism. Many of the girls were juvenile murder victims and male violence. While the tale was before the #MeToo movement, it reflects much of today's western feminist zeitgeist.
I am a published author and literary critic, so you can trust me when I say that there is no better way to escape the stressors of reality than through the lens of magical realism!
Keep an eye out for my newest book on magical realism, and prepare to tread the fine line between magic and reality.
]]>A historical romance book combines the elements of romance and history. These novels are a unique literary work that is both attractive to read and profoundly affecting and emotional.
Historical novels usually take place in some aspect of history from the past and involve characters who may or may not be real. The story often revolves around two individuals who meet, fall hopelessly in love, fight against adversity such as poverty or warfare, and then part ways.

You can find five common elements across almost all good historical romance stories:
An essential component of a historical romance novel is the setting. It should take place during an actual period in history and be set in a real historic location.
A historical romance novel's plot is made up of actual events blended with fictitious ones. You may create characters, towns, and incidents; however, they must be relevant to the period.
Although the characters can be real, made-up, or a combination of both, they should all appear, talk, and behave invariably with the period and location.
In a historical novel, the dialogue should be accurate to the time and reflect the position and status of the speakers.
The problems the characters face should be comparable to those that people from the period would encounter.

Whether your interests lie with Maine during WWII or ancient Rome under Caesar Augustus; these stories will pull at your heartstrings like no other genre because they depict characters overcoming obstacles against all odds.
These are some great historical romance books to read if you have a spare afternoon:
Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series features a sprawling family and is the spine of Netflix’s new show, The Duke and I. Daphne starts a mutual relationship with an eligible bachelor who needs to quell meddling from other potential matches (and their mothers). When feelings begin between them, things get complicated but not before we can imagine the cast for what could be next in this Regency England-set story.
The story of Beauty and the Beast is a classic, but don't worry about being bored with this one! Thane Hart may be scary on the outside, but beneath his hard exterior lies a heart that's just as tender. One glance at Lady Astrid Everleigh should tell you why he falls so deeply for her - she's an enchanting beauty who has been forced to take care of herself since she was orphaned in childhood by pirates' claws.
With a background in writing romances and mysteries, Jeannie Lin is an author to watch. Her book "Butterfly Swords" tells the story of Ai Li - daughter of the Emperor during Tang Dynasty China. When 19-year old Ai Li runs away from her arranged marriage she enlists the protection of Ryam who's trying, without success, to navigate through 8th century AD China on his own. Filled with romance and ample sword fighting scenes this novel will captivate any reader looking for something different from the typical historical romance books you've read.
The title of Lisa Kleypas' Devil in Winter is well known among romance readers as a historical romance classic. They often tell the story of two people who meet, fall in love, struggle together against odds such as poverty or war, and then face separation.
Historical romances usually include a great deal of historical detail about topics like marriage customs and life on the frontier. Since a historical romance novelist needs to be accurate in their portrayal of the time in which they are writing about, it can't simply be made up out of thin air! Did you know that historical novelists often spend years researching their subject so they can accurately portray it for their readers?
Historical American romance fiction books go beyond love and history. They typically also deal with social issues such as women's suffrage, African-American rights, and the treatment of Native Americans by the white man. Historical romance novels often provide a vehicle for exploring difficult social issues in a way that people can understand.
Historically speaking, American Romance Fiction can trace its roots back to 1877 when it was first published that featured two lovers from different social classes during the Civil War era. Historical America Romance has been around for more than 100 years with many authors such as Mary Johnston, Margaret Mitchell, Edith Wharton, and others adding their own unique twist to this genre.
I'm excited to share a curated list of my favorite historical American Romance books:
In historical romance books, falling in love isn't a surprise, but I found myself experiencing the stories, dreams, family trials, joys & sorrows together with the Bennet family.
I loved the story between John and Naomi — the characters were wonderfully written with great depth. I was concerned that there would be a sad ending with the way the book began, but while there was so much tragedy and heartbreak these characters went through, there is hope at the end!
This was an excellent story of a grandfather, a mother, and three sisters, and lives made more difficult by secrets. It is a gripping novel that explores the authenticity of a man's errors, the capacity to change, and ultimately, to forgive.
This is a story about former slaves trying to establish a life for themselves in northern Texas in the early 1870s. It's an honest portrayal of life in that era - determined, resourceful, hardworking, violent, and heartbreaking. It is a hard story to read, but one that you definitely should. I applaud the author's ability to create highly vivid images with her language.
What's your favorite historical American romance fiction book and why?
]]>If you're reading this, chances are you're one of those people who love to escape into the world of fiction and read about daring deeds and high stakes.
With stories set in ancient times or earlier periods, it's hard not to be swept away by these tales when they take place somewhere so far removed from our everyday lives as we know them today.
If you like escaping into the pages for some great storytelling, read on for five reasons why readers love historical adventure novels!
Historical fiction novels are immensely popular in today’s society because they provide readers with valuable insight into human nature as well as historical events. They can be adventure-based or mystery-driven; however, all of them have one thing in common: these books give us access to invaluable information on cultures from different eras without having to read dry textbooks or attend lectures at school!
Historical adventure fiction books are so much more than just an escape and a good read. Historical adventure stories can show you the way life was during different times and how people lived. They may even teach you about what it means to survive in a world where death could be around every corner, from an abrupt storm to a brutal war!
The past has always been shrouded with mystery; we can look at it from afar but never really get close enough to understand what life was like centuries ago. Fortunately, there are stories - historical adventures - that take us on journeys into other worlds where dramatic moments make for riveting entertainment!
The characters in historical adventure fiction books are anything but one-dimensional. They live rich lives, have depth, flaws, dreams for the future; they face adversity with humor and cunning - sometimes barely escaping death!
The historical adventure fiction setting is often exotic or mysterious - far away from your daily world. It could be a high society with lavish parties and fashion styles that defy all standards of conventionality; or new cultures with practices you’ve never even dreamed of.
The history of the world is fascinating and it's easy to see why readers love historical adventure fiction books. Whether you're looking for a way to learn more about another time period, or simply want an escape into another place and time, this selection of historical fiction books has something perfect for you. Read about these characters, their journeys, their struggles, as you witness firsthand the discovery of their brave new world.
From classics like Jane Austen to new releases by bestselling authors such as Courtney Milan, historical romance novels always have me hooked. There's nothing better than getting lost in an era long past while reading about two people who are fighting for their love amidst seemingly insurmountable adversity before they manage to find their happily ever after. This makes for great reading!
If you're looking for an escape from the daily grind while still being entertained by compelling stories then it's time to pick up one of these great reads!
Historical romance fiction books are a reflection of the true culture and society that exists in many different periods. You can learn more about historical events like wars, political movements, social norms, and fashion styles. You may even be surprised by society's views towards women at the time.
Historical romance fiction books are often set in different types of settings: castles, pirate ships, old New York City streets, etc. But did you know that they also take place on the battlefield? War has been a part of history since mankind's first conflict and so it should not be surprising to see this setting pop up as well!
The world of historical romance novels is made up primarily of female writers, which can open a window to perspectives on gender dynamics that often remain closed. Women have been the main writers of these stories for years and they explore relationships through different lenses than men do because their experiences with love and sex differ from that of men.
Historical romances are noteworthy for their progressive portrayal of strong, self-sufficient women who make decisions about love and marriage without being relegated to a life as an objectified sex symbol. One element that sets the historical romance apart from other genres is its depiction of empowered female characters making choices about both work and relationships in ways we don’t often see outside these books.
The language of historical romance fiction books is beautiful. The subject matter may have strong overtones of romantic love and marriage but that doesn't mean these novels are full of cheesy dialogue like you might expect from Nicholas Sparks' books. The colors, smells, sights even tastes - all details are woven together beautifully.
For those who enjoy reading stories of unbridled love and have already covered the classics, perhaps it's time to set your sights on the depth and drama of historical romance. Explore my latest historical romance novel here and get ready to be transported to another time and place.
